ULAR Facility Access

About the Animal Facilities

  • UCI animal facilities are locked 24 hours a day, and are subject to patrol by the UCI Police Department and UCIMC Security.
  • ULAR issues photo ID card keys for ULAR-maintained animal facilities on the main campus.
  • ULAR authorizes animal facility access at UCIMC, but the UCIMC Security office programs the cards for vivarium access.

Animal Facility Access Requirements

To obtain animal facility access, a researcher must:

  • Be UCI faculty, staff or student; others may be allowed entry on a case by case basis
  • Be listed on an approved IACUC protocol
  • Complete the ULAR Training for Animal Facility Access
  • Be enrolled in the Laboratory Animal Occupational Health Program

ULAR staff will verify that requirements have been met before authorizing access.

Replacement Card Keys

To replace lost or damaged keys:

  • The PI or lab manager (with PI cc’d) must send an email to or verifying that the applicant is authorized to receive a new card key with access to the lab's space in the ULAR animal facility.
  • ULAR will notify the applicant by email that you can obtain your photo ID card.  Allow approximately 2 business days for ULAR to process the request.

Returning Keys

Any keys issued to you by ULAR must be returned to ULAR before you separate from UC Irvine. You may return metal keys in person to the ULAR Administrative Offices (115 Bison Modular, building 515 on UCI campus). You may return ULAR card keys either in person (see above) or via campus mail (campus mail (ULAR Department, Attn: ULAR Training, 115 BSA, Zot Code 1310).
